Why Black And Red Tattoos Need Different Wavelengths

In tattoo removal consultations, we often receive the question, "My tattoo has several colors; can they all be removed?" Tattoos with mixed colors require a different approach than single-color tattoos.

The Key to Tattoo Removal is How Finely the Pigment is Broken Down

Tattoo removal is a process of breaking down pigment clusters in the skin into tiny particles, allowing the body to naturally expel them. Therefore, the crucial factor is how precisely and quickly the pigment can be broken down.

If the particles are not small enough, expulsion slows down, and the number of treatment sessions increases.

The Meaning of Picosecond-Unit Irradiation

PicoWay irradiates light in picoseconds (ps), which are one trillionth of a second. This method delivers strong power in a very short time.

The shorter the irradiation time, the less time heat has to spread to the surrounding areas. The purpose of this method is to selectively target only the pigment without affecting the surrounding skin.

A Structure That Uses Two Wavelengths

PicoWay is a dual-wavelength device that uses two wavelengths together: 1064nm and 532nm. This allows it to cover pigments and colored tattoos that were previously difficult to treat.

Customizable Settings for Each Individual

Even with the same equipment, the conditions are not the same for everyone. The factors adjusted during treatment are as follows:

  • Individual irradiation intensity settings using power control functions
  • Wavelength selection based on color composition
  • Treatment method according to the area of the treated site

Since it can treat large areas in a relatively short time, it is also applied to large tattoos.

What About Pain and Burden?

Picosecond-unit irradiation is reported to have a low burden of pain and side effects. However, perceived pain may vary individually and depends on the area and depth of the pigment.

For tattoos with a simple color composition, the Nd:YAG Tattoo Removal method may also be used.
