Three Things To Look At When Choosing A Removal Laser

Many people look for reviews and before-and-after photos first when considering semi-permanent tattoo removal. We have compiled the principles and criteria you should know beforehand.

The principle of semi-permanent tattoos is the same

The principle of semi-permanent tattoos, such as eyebrows or eyeliners, is the same as that of general tattoos. Ink is injected into the skin with a needle. If the ink particles are small, our body's cleaning cells remove them; if the particles are large, they cannot be removed and remain in the skin. These remaining ink particles are what we see as a tattoo.

There is no significant difference between semi-permanent tattoos and general tattoos, either in principle or medically. However, the term "semi-permanent" is used because multiple colors are often used to create the desired shade, and some of these colors fade over time.

The principle of removal is also the same

When large pigment particles located in the skin are broken down into smaller pieces by a laser, our body's cleaning cells engulf and transport these fragmented pieces, thus clearing the residual marks.

Ultimately, the key to removal is how effectively and finely large pigment particles can be broken down.

First, does it have a wavelength suitable for the color?

A laser with a wavelength appropriate for the color of the tattoo must be used. A laser that emits multiple wavelengths is more effective than one with a single wavelength.

Second, is the irradiation time short?

Energy must be delivered in a short time for residual marks to be removed effectively. If laser energy is applied over a long period, it can cause thermal damage to the surrounding skin, leading to secondary scars or inflammation.

Third, is the output sufficient?

The laser's output is also a criterion. Since large, rock-like particles need to be strongly shattered, it is advisable to choose a laser with high output if possible.

What comes after the equipment?

While equipment is important, experience is also crucial in semi-permanent tattoo removal. Choosing the appropriate wavelength and energy can reduce the following:

  • Blisters
  • Secondary pigmentation

What happens to eyebrows and eyes?

When removing eyebrow tattoos, the eyebrow hairs may burn, but the hair follicles, which are the roots of the eyebrows, are embedded in the skin and generally not damaged. Therefore, eyebrows usually grow back.

When removing eyeliner tattoos, eye shields are worn to protect the eyes. These are similar to contact lenses and prevent laser light from entering the eyes. Using these eye shields allows for eyeliner tattoo removal without eye damage.
