Laser for Surgical Scars: Preventing Bruising, Swelling, and Scars | Yonsei Star Dermatology Sinchon

When you're concerned about bruising, swelling, and red scars after plastic surgery, we've clearly outlined what to check and what lasers to consider in the early stages of recovery.

After plastic surgery, it might seem like results will be immediate, but in reality, swelling, bruising, and stitches can make it difficult to gauge changes for a while. If you are prone to bruising or have slow wound healing due to your constitution, you might even develop cosmetic surgery scars, leading to deeper concerns. So, before scars set in, from what point should you manage them, and what should you manage? To put it simply, the initial stage after removing stitches and when the skin is healing is known to be an important time for managing scars to make them lighter.

Why do bruises occur and when do they fade?

Bruises occur when red blood cells leak out of blood vessels. They often appear more one or two days after surgery rather than on the day of the surgery. Observing the changing colors can give you an idea of the bruise's recovery stages.

  • Initially, they appear as a dark reddish-black color.
  • Over time, they turn purplish.
  • Then, they lighten to a pale yellow.
  • They usually disappear almost completely within about two weeks.

However, there can be individual differences in recovery speed, and depending on one's constitution, bruises may persist for over a month.

What a bruise laser does when bruising lasts a long time

If you bruise easily and they don't fade quickly, a bruise laser, part of surgical scar lasers, can shorten the duration of bruising. Especially when bruises are a dark reddish-black, treatment can reportedly improve them to a lighter color with just one session.

The darker the bruise, the better the laser response, so when dark reddish-black bruises appear, it's a good time to consider a bruise laser.

Detailed explanations about bruises themselves can also be found in the Bruise Symptoms and Recovery Process guide.

Why early management is important for cosmetic scars

For those prone to scarring due to their constitution, early surgical scar laser treatment is known as the golden time to minimize scar formation. Laser treatment can begin after stitches are removed and the skin has healed.

In the clinic, we often see people who come in after their scars have already clearly set in. Therefore, checking the condition and setting a direction in the early stages of recovery can be helpful. If you are curious about your scar type, please refer to the Surgical Scar Management guide.

How to treat redness and raised scars

The approach to symptoms that appear during scar recovery varies depending on their pattern. The table below makes it easy to understand.

Symptom PatternApproach
Skin is red and raisedVbeam Prima suppresses proliferated blood vessels to reduce redness
Bruising, red scars, red stretch marks, facial rednessApproach aims to quickly manage symptoms that appear red
Scars are swollen and raisedScar injections are used to reduce their height

Symptoms related to redness are also covered in the Facial Redness Management and Red Stretch Mark Treatment guides. For swollen scars, Triamcinolone Scar Injection is used to gradually refine them.

If your scar is old

Even if a cosmetic scar is old, surgical scar laser treatment can be considered. Since old scars are already set, it is best to examine the current scar's depth, color, and shape through consultation before deciding on a direction. When a direct approach to refining the scar is needed, Surgical Scar Revision may also be considered.

Here are some important points to keep in mind during the recovery process:

  • Consult about the treatment timing after stitches are removed and the skin has healed.
  • The management approach may differ depending on whether the bruise is dark or light.
  • The approach varies by symptom, such as redness or swelling.
  • Since recovery speed can vary individually, avoid making excessive self-judgments.

How are consultations and treatments conducted?

Surgical scar lasers and bruise lasers have different treatment directions depending on the scar's condition and recovery period. Therefore, it is important to directly examine the current skin condition and determine the timing. If you bruise easily or are concerned about cosmetic scars, it is helpful to check your condition in the early stages of recovery.
