Hello, this is Yonsei Star Dermatology Sinchon.

One of the most concerning skin changes during pregnancy and childbirth is stretch marks. We often receive questions in the consultation room like, "Will these marks disappear on their own over time?" or "Is it okay to receive laser treatment during pregnancy?" To answer directly, stretch marks do not disappear naturally, and improvement is better reported when management begins in the early stages, while redness remains.

Why do stretch marks occur?

Our skin inherently has elasticity, allowing it to stretch naturally with changes in body shape. However, if sudden changes occur in a short period, the skin over-expands, causing the collagen fiber bonds in the dermis to break and tear. These damaged traces are what we call stretch marks.

During pregnancy, the abdomen expands the most, so stretch marks most commonly appear there. However, as subcutaneous fat in other areas also increases during the process of protecting the fetus and accumulating nutrients, they can also appear on the breasts, thighs, and buttocks.

Conditions that cause stretch marks during pregnancy

Stretch marks do not necessarily occur in all pregnant women. However, during this period, the skin is affected by hormones, and as pregnancy progresses towards full term, the abdomen significantly expands, increasing the likelihood that management will be needed. Hydration is also an important aspect to consider. If the skin remains dry for an extended period, its elasticity gradually decreases, creating an environment where stretch marks are more likely to form under the same conditions.

If you wish to prepare in advance, please consider the following from early pregnancy:

  • Consistently apply moisturizing cream frequently to prevent dry skin
  • Manage diet and condition to minimize rapid weight changes
  • Also care for areas prone to stretching, such as the abdomen, breasts, and thighs
  • Check product ingredients to ensure they are safe for use during pregnancy

Please note that some products may contain ingredients that are not suitable for use during pregnancy, so it is recommended to consult thoroughly with a medical professional before deciding to use them. While moisturizing care can be somewhat helpful for prevention, please also remember that it is not a substitute for treating existing Stretch Mark Treatment.

Once formed, will stretch marks disappear on their own?

No, they do not disappear on their own. Many people assume that the red marks seen immediately after childbirth gradually turning white means the condition is improving, but in reality, you should understand the opposite.

The red stage is the initial phase, and when it turns white over time, it is closer to the process of scar formation rather than recovery.

Why early management of red stretch marks is important

The period when a reddish tint remains is the initial state of Red Stretch Marks. When management begins at this stage, relatively noticeable improvements are reported. If using the Vbeam Prima vascular laser, there is no need to apply a separate topical anesthetic cream, making it a relatively simple procedure once the mother's condition has recovered.

Laser treatment is gaining attention for its potential to be performed during pregnancy with minimal side effects. However, given the sensitive timing and condition, it is essential to proceed only after thorough consultation with your primary physician.

How are old white stretch marks different?

Over time, the marks gradually turn white and the indented shape becomes more distinct. The skin thins, allowing the subcutaneous tissue beneath to show through, sometimes giving it a slightly purplish tint. For White Stretch Marks that have progressed in this way, the laser method used, such as Ultrapulse Encore, will differ after a more detailed assessment of the condition. Therefore, it tends to take more time and be more complex than early-stage treatment.

However, treatment is possible even for marks that appeared more than 10 years ago. You do not have to give up from the start. The approach varies depending on the condition and timing, as follows:

CategoryColorTimingManagement Approach
Early Stretch MarksRedAround childbirthPrimarily vascular laser, relatively simple
Old Stretch MarksWhite/PurplishSeveral years or more passedLaser method adjusted after condition assessment, requires time

When and how should pregnant women start stretch mark treatment?

In summary, for pregnant women's stretch mark treatment, selecting the timing for safety is crucial. Improvement is better reported when started in the early stages while redness remains, and the decision to proceed will be made with the medical team based on the mother's recovered condition. If the marks are deeply indented or have formed like scars, other approaches, including Surgical Scar Revision, may also be considered. Since the application method varies depending on the individual's skin condition and whether they are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is recommended to determine the starting point through consultation.
