Immune Cells Finish The Job On Eyeliner Pigment

The laser breaks down pigment into tiny fragments, and immune cells are responsible for carrying the ink out. This is the principle of eyeliner removal.

When removing semi-permanent eyeliner, the equipment used determines the outcome. The reason for this can be understood by looking at how removal works.

What the Laser Does and What the Body Does

Laser removal is divided into two stages: what the equipment does and what the body does.

  • The laser is applied to the tattooed area.
  • The pigment is broken down into tiny fragments.
  • Immune cells engulf the ink.
  • It is expelled from the body through the bloodstream.

The laser is involved in breaking down the pigment, and immune cells are responsible for carrying it out.

Why Smaller Fragments Are Better

The smaller the pigment is broken down, the faster immune cells can process it. This is because smaller fragments are easier to put into the expulsion pathway.

This is why picosecond lasers, which have a pulse duration a thousand times shorter than nanosecond lasers (which were mainly used for tattoo removal in the past), are now used. Even with the same pass, the pigment is broken down more finely. The equipment configuration is detailed in R-Zero Pico-Frectat Tattoo Removal, and the traditional method is summarized in Nd:YAG Tattoo Removal.

The Burden of Treating Areas Close to the Eye

Eyeliner is a very sensitive area close to the eyes. Therefore, many people worry about eye damage.

Before the procedure, a metal eye shield is inserted to protect the eyeball.

Since an eye shield is inserted before starting, you do not need to worry too much about the risk of the laser being applied to the eye. If you are curious about the procedure, please refer to Tattoo Removal Treatment Guide.

It's Not About the Price, But Where You Get It Done

For semi-permanent eyeliner, we recommend having it removed with a proper laser at a dermatology clinic, not at an inexpensive illegal facility. This is to ensure the procedure is performed without leaving scars or damage.
