The cost of tattoo removal varies greatly depending on the area, color, equipment, and number of sessions. As news spread that an influencer spent a large sum to remove full-body tattoos, more people have been asking in the clinic why it's so expensive and how painful it is. Therefore, from a dermatologist's perspective, we will summarize the truth about tattoo removal costs and three key things you must know before starting. The amounts in the video are examples to explain the case and are not guaranteed costs for everyone.

Larger areas mean longer treatment times

If the tattoo area is large, the treatment time will be longer. Removing a full arm tattoo requires prolonged laser exposure in one spot, and full-body tattoos can take nearly half a day. Additionally, color tattoos cannot be removed with a single wavelength and require multiple wavelengths, which extends treatment time. Tattoos that are difficult or located in specific areas also take more time.

Results and costs vary depending on the equipment

The type of laser used significantly impacts material costs. In the past, Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers were commonly used for tattoo treatment, but recently, picosecond lasers are widely used. There is a considerable difference in the cost of these two machines, and the reason for using better equipment is that it yields better treatment results.

Tattoos are not removed in a single session

Tattoo removal is performed over multiple sessions. Some tattoos may be completed in one or two sessions, but if a lot of ink is involved, multiple sessions may be necessary. You should remember that even if the cost per session is not high, the total cost can increase when adding up all the sessions.

  • Early sessions: This stage involves breaking down large pigment clusters into smaller pieces.
  • Mid-sessions: As the broken particles are discharged, the tattoo begins to visually fade.
  • Late sessions: Shallow tattoos generally lighten, but there can be individual differences.

Before getting a large tattoo, it's good to keep in mind that removing it later can incur significant costs and time.

Lifestyle habits that determine recovery

Post-tattoo removal care determines the results. Areas further from the face may require more sessions due to reduced skin regeneration, and the same applies to color tattoos. Especially, consuming alcohol and smoking after treatment can alter skin metabolism and reduce effectiveness, so it is important to avoid drinking and smoking during the recovery period.

To reduce pain, prioritize your condition

Tattoo removal is painful because the laser bursts pigment particles, irritating surrounding nerves. If there is a lot of pigment, more particles burst, so the pain is stronger in the initial stages, and as sessions progress and particles decrease, it becomes less painful. If your condition is not good, you are more likely to feel pain, so it is advisable to refrain from excessive alcohol or smoking the day before treatment.

Results may vary individually, and accurate diagnosis and treatment are determined after consultation.
