Many people struggling with acne often wonder, 'Could it be because of what I'm eating?' In the past, there was much skepticism about the link between food and acne, but recent studies have reported that certain foods can worsen acne. Today, we will delve into dietary adjustments that can help manage acne.

1. High Glycemic Index Carbohydrates Can Be a Seed for Acne

This doesn't mean you should avoid carbohydrates entirely. However, it is advisable to reduce the intake of carbohydrates with a high Glycemic Index (GI), which rapidly raise blood sugar. These foods can activate sebaceous glands and cause inflammation, potentially leading to acne.

Refined carbohydrates primarily fall into this category. Representative examples include:

  • White bread, white rice: The refining process removes nutrients from brown rice and increases the glycemic index.
  • Processed foods: Hamburgers, cakes, cookies, and sugary drinks often contain high amounts of oil or carbohydrates.

Conversely, low GI foods that do not drastically raise blood sugar include:

  • Whole grains: Multi-grain rice, etc.
  • Fruits: Fresh fruits
  • Vegetables: Cabbage, carrots, and other vitamin-rich vegetables

2. How Do Dairy Products Affect Acne?

Dairy products are an important source of protein, calcium, and vitamins. However, some studies suggest that dairy consumption can increase insulin levels, promoting sebaceous gland development and potentially worsening acne.

There are also reports that low-fat milk, in particular, may strengthen hormones that exacerbate insulin. Nevertheless, we do not unconditionally recommend avoiding dairy products. Especially for young women, calcium deficiency is common, making it difficult to completely disregard this important source of calcium. When consuming dairy, it may be helpful to choose probiotic drinks like low-sugar yogurt, which do not have a high glycemic index. Dairy products such as butter and cream cheese should be consumed selectively.

3. Sugar Intake Promotes Inflammatory Reactions and Aging

Sugar is known to be a food that easily causes inflammation. It is also a type of high-glycemic index carbohydrate and affects bodily aging. Excessive sugar intake can lead to glycation, where sugar in the blood combines with proteins or lipids. This can damage proteins like collagen and elastin in the skin, accelerating aging. Therefore, reducing sugar intake is recommended for skin health and anti-aging.

Representative sugar-containing foods include:

  • Chocolate
  • Sugary drinks
  • Candy

4. Do Spicy Foods Worsen Acne?

There is still much debate about the correlation between spicy foods and acne. Spicy foods like chili peppers and mustard can be perceived as pain, causing the body to release endorphins, which provide pleasure and can help relieve stress.

Spicy foods can cause temporary heat and blood vessel dilation in the body. Therefore, if you have facial redness or rosacea along with acne, or if you have sensitive skin that easily blushes, spicy foods may worsen your symptoms. There is still a lack of extensive research on whether spicy foods directly increase acne itself, though some studies suggest a possibility.

5. Acne Management Requires Both Dietary Control and Medical Treatment

While acne cannot be entirely unrelated to food, food alone cannot be definitively identified as the sole cause. For acne management, dietary adjustments must be accompanied by medical treatment. Especially for severe inflammatory acne, self-care alone may not be sufficient for improvement. Professional treatments such as medication or laser procedures may be necessary, so it is crucial to consult a dermatologist to establish an appropriate treatment plan.
