Bed Bug Bites: Effective Response! A Dermatologist Explains
Recently, bed bugs have reappeared in Korea after 50 years, causing an emergency nationwide. In the past, people often visited dermatology clinics after being bitten by bed bugs, mainly after traveling to Europe or Southeast Asia. However, they are now being found in public places and accommodations within Korea. For those wondering how to respond to bed bug bites, today we will learn about how to distinguish bed bug bites and the correct way to deal with them.
Bed Bug Bites: How Can You Distinguish Them?
When bitten by bed bugs, the following characteristic marks may appear:
- They are red and accompanied by itching.
- Because bed bugs move while biting, there may be three or four bites in a linear pattern, or they may move in a zigzag pattern across the body, resulting in zigzag-shaped marks.
- They are mainly active in the evening, so bites often occur on the abdomen, hands, arms, and legs, which are exposed at night.
- A key characteristic is experiencing severe itching, beyond just simple red erythema lesions.
What is the Difference Between Mosquito Bites and Bed Bug Bites?
Insect bites may look similar, but there are a few differences between mosquitoes and bed bugs.
- Mosquito bites: Generally, a single bite results in severe red wheals (swelling) and intense itching at that spot. It is rare to be bitten continuously in one area.
- Bed bug bites: Because they move across the skin while biting, three or four marks in a linear or zigzag pattern are common. The swelling after a bite may be relatively smaller compared to mosquito bites.
If You've Been Bitten by Bed Bugs, Here's How to Respond
Most bed bug bites tend to heal naturally over time. However, appropriate measures are needed to prevent secondary bacterial infections and relieve itching.
- Wound area management: Proper treatment of the wound area is important to prevent secondary bacterial infections.
- Itching relief: If itching is severe and you scratch, bacteria can penetrate, so ointments, antihistamines, or, if necessary, antibiotics may be used to relieve itching.
- Over-the-counter medications: For severe itching, you can try products like Bumulli or Mul-pas. These products can help cool the affected area and relieve itching, preventing scratching.
If the itching is so severe that it disrupts sleep, applying cold ice to the bitten area can help. Cooling the skin can alleviate itching. However, it is advisable to apply and remove it repeatedly to avoid frostbite from prolonged contact.
When to Seek Help from a Dermatologist
If the itching is severe or if you desire more definitive treatment, it is advisable to visit a dermatology clinic. In such cases, oral antihistamines or, if necessary, steroids may be used in combination for treatment.
What if Scars or Pigmentation Remain?
Not all bed bug bites leave red marks or pigmentation. However, if you have a skin type prone to scarring or pigmentation, even minor bed bug bites can leave traces. Such remaining red or brown marks can be alleviated relatively quickly through laser treatment. If you are concerned about these marks, we recommend visiting a nearby dermatology clinic for a consultation with a dermatologist.
