Some people find that after the tattoo color has faded, a brown mark remains in its place, which bothers them. They may return for more laser treatment, wondering if it hasn't been completely removed.
We've put together information on what these brown marks are, how long to wait, and if there are ways to speed up their fading.

Pigment has already faded, only a mark remains
When tattoo pigment is almost completely removed, strong laser irradiation often produces no reaction. This is because the laser needs pigment to react with, and that target is no longer present.
At this point, the tattoo removal procedure itself can be considered virtually complete. What remains is not the tattoo, but a mark.

The sequence of turning brown
After the tattoo pigment inside the skin is broken down by the laser, the skin will appear slightly red immediately after the procedure. This redness gradually turns brown over time, remaining as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
The transition from redness to brown is not a sign of incorrect removal, but a common stage in the skin's healing process.

What happens if left untreated
While there are individual differences, most marks will fade over time without separate treatment.
| Timeframe | Generally observed progress |
|---|---|
| Immediately after procedure | Redness |
| Weeks to months later | Redness changes to brown |
| 6 months to 2 years | Naturally fades to almost invisible |
However, individual differences may exist, and the progress varies depending on the area and skin type.

When the waiting time is a burden
Tattoo removal itself is a long journey, taking anywhere from 6 months to several years. If you have to live with a brown mark for over a year on top of that, the psychological burden can be significant.

That's why many people express a desire for faster removal.

The option of mark removal treatment
This approach uses laser toning with pigment lasers. The procedure typically involves:
- Treatments at 2 to 3-week intervals
- Repeated irradiation with weak intensity, divided into multiple passes
- A total of 5 to 10 sessions
This process can help to clear up brown marks that would otherwise fade over a year, in just a few months. You can find the composition of toning treatments in the Pico·Dual·Gold-Diamond Toning guide.
How to view the remaining marks
Misunderstanding brown marks as incompletely removed tattoos and repeatedly applying strong lasers can put a strain on the skin. The first step is to distinguish whether what remains is pigment or a mark.
The overall flow of tattoo removal is detailed in the Tattoo Removal Treatment Guide, and the equipment used in the removal stage is summarized in R-Zero Pico-Frectat Tattoo Removal.
